"Design Informant" The Dormer Edition

During these slow economic times not to mention a slow time of the year for the construction industry, John Landry Architect and Builder also owner of Route 9 Design & Build located in Northampton, MA speaks about a low cost way to invest money in your home that reap great long term rewards.

Just recently John added a 14’ x 10’ dormer to his home in Northampton. This small addition to his residence added more headroom and natural light to an unfinished attic space that he is converting into a lofty finished teenage hangout space for his eldest daughter.
A small architectural enhancement such as adding a dormer or dormers to your home can add greatly to the exterior aesthetics of a house, providing more space inside such as head room to an attic bedroom, office or studio as well as create a more charming feel to the living space. The dormer window provides natural light, fresh air and perhaps some dramatic treetop views. From the outside dormers tend to improve your home’s curb appeal, not to mention the resale value.
We design dormers in a style and size that is appropriate to the architectural style of your home. The new dormer John Built for his home is a Shed Dormer. Shed Dormers have a roof with a single sloping plane that extends over the window or windows in John’s case. The Shed Style Dormer is seen in a wide variety of architectural styles including Colonial Revival as well as Arts & Crafts.
Some dormer treatments almost undeniably describe particular styles. One example of this maybe exposed, extended rafter ends on a hipped dormer tend to signal that the style of that home is one of Craftsman architecture.
If you know the style of your home, check out what dormers may enhance your exterior and interior aesthetics.

Arched dormers: Second Empire, Beaux Arts, French Eclectic
Eyebrow dormers: Shingle, Romanesque, Queen Anne
Gable dormers: Chateauesque, Craftsman ,Colonial Revival , Georgian, Queen Anne, Shingle, Stick, Tudor and many others styles.
Hipped dormers: Prairie, Shingle, Craftsman
Oval dormers: French Eclectic, Beaux Arts, possibly Italian Renaissance
Pediment dormers: Georgian, Federal, Colonial Revival styles
Shed dormers: Craftsman, Arts & Crafts, Colonial Revival
